Byker Boat Launch Thursday 31st May - invitation

Press release from Byker boat

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Dear friend,

I am writing to invite you to the launch event for Byker Boat which will take place on Thursday 31st May.

At 10am we will leave St Michael's Church Byker, Hedlam St (NE6 2DX), walking the boat down to St Peters Marina for the launch.
At 11am we will lower the boat into the water with opportunities to take a turn on an oar - life jackets and safety boat provided (no experience necessary).

Commissioned by Newcastle's Science City community science team, we started this community boat building project back in January. With two weeks to go our 22ft St Ayles Coastal rowing skiff is now almost ready to squeeze through the narrow Church doors at St Michael's and make her way down to the Tyne.

Two groups have shared this build, one group of excluded teenagers (YMCA Newcastle) and the second group are adults recovering from alcohol / substance abuse (Norcare and Tyne Housing). The boat will become a community resource, racing on the Tyne, traveling to coastal festivals and helping to reintroduce coastal rowing back into the region.

Your Homes Newcastle have kindly donated some authentic Byker paint and the oars are being varnished. We expect to spend 2 hours on the water from 11am to 1pm on Thursday 31st, then back up to the Church for some sandwiches and a mug of coffee / tea around 1.30-2pm, where you can try your hand at some traditional woodworking.

So come along and witness what a creative community can achieve by sharing skills and utilising their natural surroundings.

I would appreciate an RSVP if you intend to come back to the Church afterwards so that we can arrange numbers for food and beverages.

Please circulate this to your networks, launch poster, photos and press release are attached, any questions just drop me a line, everyone welcome!

best wishes

Pictures from outing at Tynemouth Haven 12th May

(download)

On Saturday we ended up launching from Tynemouth haven instead of Cullercoats because of the surf. The waves were really rolling in at Cullercoats and much more favorable conditions were found inside the shields at Tynemouth. It was a beautiful sunny day to boot, making for some enjoyable rowing.

We had two more first time rowers give it a go and found it enjoyable so we look forward to seeing them again soon. The next outing is planned for 26th May so let me know if you're coming. If I know you'll be there I can keep you informed of any last-minute changes such's as altered launch location. Sorry if anyone turned up at Cullercoats for a row and couldn't find us.

Cheers,

Seymour

Next Outing: Saturday 12th May @ Cullercoats (10:30am start)

This Saturday's outing plans to pick up where we left off on Monday. There was a great turnout for what was a fairly last minute outing so thanks for being a part of it. Three more first-timers so hopefully we will continue that trend as well. I met quite a few people at the beach and in the Beaches and Cream cafe that day who might also come down to check us out - if that's you please bring wellies and a warm fleece or light waterproof coat to row.

On Wednesday (9th May) a few repairs will be attended to - mainly the broken pins that were being used as an alternative to the rope oar fastenings - so give Charlie or Angela a call if you want to help out with that.

There will be slightly later than normal timings at the boat shed but we should still be down to the beach at Cullercoats bay by 10:30.

Outing for Bank holiday Monday planned @ Cullercoats

Tonight some of the club have been making investigations into potentially keeping the Skiff at the Low Lights Tavern at North Shields. www.lowlightstavern.co.uk. It would certainly be great to have a ‘home’ centre for our community club which was near the coast and this would make taking bringing the boat out for a row that much easier than it is at the moment.

In addition, we decided it would almost be rude not to take Grace out on Monday – as it is a bank holiday (7th May).

Rowing Training Sat 28th for Regatta Season

The season of Scottish Coastal Rowing Regattas is in full swing. The next is at Port Seaton - just east of Edinburgh - on 5th/6th May (weekend after this one coming). It's not too late to take a our boat up there to take part but we need just one more volunteer to make a crew of five! Are you that person?

If so please come down on Saturday for our next training session. We're back to the usual routine and will be starting at 10:30am at Cullercoats.

As always please contact me to sign up. If the weather's as amazingly bonnie as it was on Sunday you'll be tanned by lunchtime!

Cheers,

Seymour

Sunday rowers: more relaxed than normal?

Img_1139

This Sunday's outing is an afternoon one and might be a little more relaxed than normal. If the weather turns on us (as it threatens to) we might take the boat and some crew down to the Low Lights Tavern in North Sheilds. There a possibility we'll be able to keep the boat near there so it might be a good opportunity to go and see what the hospitality is like!

However, for those who are keen, we'll do at least one session on the water. These people are signed up so far:

Newcommers and club members are encouraged to get in touch so that a place in a boat can be reserved. I will update the list above as and when people contact me.

Feel free to call, e-mail or text. We look forward to seeing you there.

Photos from the Family Day

Img_1212_cur
Despite the threat of rain we were lucky enough to have a dry and calm day on Saturday. It wasn’t as warm as we would have liked but there were at least 30 people there and many of them had a row in the boat.

The bay at Newton is naturally shielded by a spur of rock which breaks the waves and makes for an excellent place to have a go in a rowing boat for the first time. Another thing which makes it fun is that there are bouys and flags in the water giving you a reference point to see your speed and something to row around for regatta training.

Talking of which, the season is upon us. The next one is at Port Seton, just outside Edinburgh on 4th and 5th May. In June there are two more – and we have another Family day planned for 2nd June at Newton by the sea.

Our next planned outing is this coming Saturday – 14th April but this will have to be rescheduled due to a clash with the Trinity Men’s breakfast. It has been provisionally moved to Sunday 22nd April at 3 in the afternoon, the first afternoon event which might allow others to make it.

See the Gosforth Community Rowing Calendar and Events page for more details.
